Glam Squad - get the look

  • When Love Happens: AMVCA

Hiyah! I feel I should kick off by giving you fair warning that this post is going to be picture heavy.

The 2015 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards took place recently and When Love Happens was nominated in three categories. I'd been looking forward to the ceremony since the nominees' announcement last year and there was only one label I trusted to give me the red carpet SAG Awards/Golden Globes/Oscars touch. You'll remember the label from this post when they were known as Peridot & Ruby. Thanks to a rebrand, they are simply now known as Peridot.

When I booked my AMVCA dress consultation with Peridot, I had no idea what I wanted to wear but I knew for certain that I wanted my very own #SomethingPeridot. Thanks to Peridot CEO, Lola Ashafa, I knew I was in safe hands and Peridot certainly didn't disappoint. Peridot went above and beyond any expectation I could possibly have had with a full vision of what I should look like on the day and even helped me book THE best team, ever - hair, makeupphotography and brought all the professional touches that made all the difference in the world.

As Peridot was also dressing my super talented friend Lamide Akintobi, we decided to make a girly day of it, get dressed for the show and attend together.

On the day itself, James Omokwe (director of Awakening) being the ever supportive friend and creative that he is, showed up super bright eye and bushy tailed and surprised me with a whole load of equipment to help document my getting ready process. The video will be on my YoutTube channel soon.

I cut all the relaxed ends off my hair in August 2014 and though I have successfully experimented with red carpet styles by myself a few times, I was not ready to try to even think about trusting myself to do it this time. Dupe Talabi of Tasala HQ was a Godsend. I sat in her chair and nearly fell asleep because she was so gentle with my very unruly, dry, stubborn, kinky hair. When I got out of her chair, my 8(?) inches of 4G (as in tougher than Godis) hair with the aid of a few lines of Marley, had been given length, colour, style and a beautiful low chignon.

Then Banke Meshia Lawal of BM-Pro got to working on my face. A pat here, a sweep and a dab there, a flick here...

... and I was given all the accents I needed to carry off that matte, nude, lip that didn't trip up my dress.

This was not makeup, this was light, wearable art.

Did I mention that Peridot stock gorgeous jewelry and accessories too? Well, they do and I wore these Peridot beauties to the AMVCA.

Like the polish? I can't remember the name of the colour but I had my manicure and pedicure done by Funmi at BNatural Spa, Victoria Island, Lagos. Perhaps she'll remember should you happen to be in the area and ask her?

Now, I may not know what it feels like to hold such prestigious awards in my hands as Uzo Aduba, Lupita Nyong'o, Kerry Washington, Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep do but my goodness, that day, I felt like I was walking on the same kind of air they do. That unmistakable screen confidence, I was awash with emotion several times that day but as I had promised not to embarrass everyone by crying as I got ready, I had to stay cool. Ice cool.

I am ever so grateful to everyone who played a significant role in making this look, this day, come to life.

And now, more pictures of my gorgeous Peridot dress.

Just before I hopped on the Red Carpet, Peridot had the bright idea of adding a band to my hair and this is what it looked like (click to expand picture):

  • Peridot and Ruby

I need to tell you a story about Something Peridot that happened to me thanks to Peridot and Ruby.
Once upon a time in 2014, Mo Abudu turned 50 and threw a ball to end them all. A lowly maiden was all a-fret and full of trepidation as she stared down the barrel of her invitation to the ball with nothing appropriate to wear. Okay, I totally can't keep this up so let me continue witha few pictures first:

I checked into the Westown Hotel in Ikeja early that morning and the uber glam squad made magic happen. I went from beast to this blessed creation of God in minutes. Okay, fine. Hours.

I don't know why I'm being all Quentin Tarantino about this, jumping from one thing to the next. Let me start again. This is a story about the dress that changed my life forever.

The first time I saw this dress, I cried. I was absolutely besides myself much in the way I have seen brides do on Say Yes To The Dress. Then came my first fitting - I cried some more. Never in my life had anyone made me anything so prescious that defied all my own natural instincts to skalk around like a slob. I mean, just look at this dress!

    I mean...

There's an instavid on my timeline but you don't know love like I do till you have this

I want this dress in every colour - just look at all the possibilities

  • Turbanista: Vol. 1

MTV Base recently held a press day to reboot the MTV Shuga series. I had a fair bit of running around to do that day - and by that, I mean sitting in traffic for more than two hours just to get to the venue - but thankfully, even though the roads let me down, my casual crumpled shirt, forgot-my-mascara-and-earrings, I'm-surprised-I-even-remembered-to-put-my-shoes-on-look-didn't. I think.

     Oreka, Somkele and Zee

I'm 25 weeks post relaxer at this point which is a first for me. I'm very pleased with the growth I have so far though only my next relaxer date, trimming and comparisson pictures will tell if I have accomplished my goal. There'll be more of the hair talk on Scalp Lock in the meantime, here's a video that might help you do better at tying your turban. Don't worry about making it look exactly like hers, I think half the fun is being able to find the shape that suits your beautiful head.

    Peace, Love & Turb IT!
